The Digit-al Dozen Does Fairytales: The Little Mermaid

Today for The Digit-al Dozen does fairytales I have for you The Little Mermaid. But not the Disney version, this is the Hans Christian Andersen version.

There is no Disney type of happy ending here. No, in the original version, the little mermaid saves the prince but he never sees her. He falls in love with the girl who found him on the beach. The little mermaid wants to become human to be with the prince and to gain a soul that will live forever (mermaids don't have souls). She is transformed and must get true love's kiss and marry the prince, if she doesn't she will die. But the prince marries the other girl (gasp!) and the little mermaid is heartbroken. The only way to save herself is to kill the prince and she can return to being a mermaid. But she can't kill him. So the little mermaid throws herself into the sea and dissolves into foam. But because of her sacrifice she will gain her own soul and live forever.

For my mermaid tail I used BarryM Kiwi (two coats), stamped using BarryM Cancun (matte) with MoYou Sailor 04. On my other nails I have BarryM Elderberry to represent the sea. I used watered down acrylic paint to create the smokey/misty foam. The glitter on her tail and the glitter in the foam (yep, that's her dissolved body) is Once Upon a Polish: Under the Sea.

TGIF: The Digit-al Dozen Does Art: 31 Day Challenge 2013! Day 11: Rainbow Nails

Oh my goodness! I had no idea how I was going to combine all my themes for today! TGIF: Thank Goodness, Indy Indie Friday; The Digit-al Dozen Does Art, and 31 Day Challenge 2013 (relaxed version). So I decided to focus on the Indie polishes themselves since they are a work of art! :) See, see what I did there? Wink wink! ;)

As I was reading a book: How To Be An Explorer of the World: Portable Art Life Museum by Keri Smith, I came across this:
"The Indo-European root of the word 'art' is 'to arrange; or 'fit together' (join). In this light, art can be pared down to its most simplistic form. We begin by collecting, then playing the the materials or objects, organizing them in a variety of ways, making new combinations, trying new things, then observing the arrangements we have made". (Keri Smith, 15)
Bah! Oh my goodness! Does that not describe us all to a "T"? We collect our tens, hundreds, or thousands of bottles of polish. Oh, we definitely play with them and organize them (by color or by brand?) New combos? Why duh! Of course! Trying new things? Yep, daily almost especially with all the nail art challenges. And oh how we "observe the arrangements we have made".....BLOGS! This is why I chose Indies for my art piece today. :)

Oh and there are a lot of photos here...just to warn you! :) Oh and these are each two coats!

First up in the rainbow is red: Elemental Styles Iron Man-ia. This is a gorgeous red jelly with red and gold glitters! Sadly she doesn't carry this polish any more and is just trying to sell her last polishes :( But she still does have some pretties available! Go visit her Elemental Styles Etsy Page

Next color in the rainbow is orange: Glimmer by Erica's Spicy Pumpkin. This is from her fall line and is a clear based glitter with orange, brown, garnet, and red glitters. I love her glitters! So many fun unique combos! Visit her Glimmer by Erica Etsy Page

Next up is yellow: NerdLacquer Gorramit. This is from her Serenity Trio. Wowza are her polishes amazing! Sadly she's been away for a while but has announced plans on returning! Polish crazed ladies rejoice! :)

How about green: Once Upon a Polish The Beanstalk. Sadly another amazing Indie polish maker who has stopped making polishes. I loved her concept and glitters! This is a green glitter in a clear base.

Here's blue: Rainbow Polish Sky Walker. From her Star Set 2 (inspired by Star Wars!) Epic geeky win! This is a "slightly milky blue base containing small blue glitters, blue"lightsaber" glitter bars, white square glitters and small blue dust glitter". Visit her Rainbow Polish Etsy Shop (and this polish is still there!)

On to indigo: A England Tristam is the closest I could get. And it is stunning! Though they are a bit more big-leagued, A England is still and Indie! Visit her shop A England.

And last but not least purple: Dollish Polish Hylian Princess. From her Zelda Duo (another epic geeky win!) This was a huge lemming of mine finally squashed! It is purple, white, and gold glitters in a clear base. Visit her Dollish Polish shop

Big ol' lineup! :)

Backside lineup!

Now, did I cheat a bit for today? Nah, I don't think so! So many talented women create gorgeous works of art for our fingers! We must praise them! And of course give them our money! :)

Depression Awareness Mani

Today I have a mani that is very special to me. As many of you know, October is Depression Awareness month. I thought I would try and convey a bit of my struggle with depression through my mani. But why then is the mani above black when green is the color for Depression Awareness?

Let me explain.

I created this scrapbook page a few years ago to describe myself. This is one of the times that I was my truest (does that make sense). Just in case you can't read it:
Sometimes it feels that I might lose myself in the fog. That the depression has won. But then ever so small I see the real me that is hiding in the fog. I scrape away at the fog, moving it and brushing it aside. There in the middle of the darkest part I find myself. I am not alone. I can get through this. I know I can. I have done it before. Depression isn't what defines me.
What defines me is how well I rise after falling. I get through it and become a better person. A truer meaning of myself.

So this dark, black mani is the fog that is depression. It comes and goes in waves, never fully leaving me. Never fully letting me be whole since I was around 16. I suffered sometimes in silence and other times in crippling pain for all to hear. But I have always gotten through it. I will always get through it.

This is me scraping and brushing away at the fog to show the truer me underneath it. Some days are better than others. Some days are great, some are a personal hell that you would never wish on anyone. And some days, life throws you something new and adds on severe anxiety....gee, thanks life, like I really needed that. But always and forever, I will get through it.

My true self is reveled. I am not just one thing. I am multiple experiences combined together to create what I am meant to be in this world. This is my true self. I sparkle and shine through the thickening fog that surrounds me.

In a weird flip of irony, I am (though not always) content with my depression. Does this sound odd or weird to you? Let me explain. My depression has made me who I am today. I am strong because of it. I have learned so much about myself and others because of it.

Though my depression doesn't define me, it has help create and mold who I am today. It is how well I rise after falling (thank you Maid in Manhattan for the quote) that helps me to stand tall and proud and say....yes I have depression. No, I can't just snap out of it, could someone with diabetes just snap out of it? No. Depression is a real disease with real symptoms.

I myself suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and a form of anxiety (I say a form because we are still not sure what it is. Surprise says life, let's add on something new to deal with! *Awesome*). Seasonal Affective Disorder is characterized by the onset of depression during the winter months, when there is less natural sunlight. The depression generally lifts during spring and summer. SAD may be effectively treated with light therapy, but nearly half of those with SAD do not get better with light therapy alone. Antidepressant medication and psychotherapy can reduce SAD symptoms, either alone or in combination with light therapy.

I am sorry for my ramblings on. But I really felt like I should speak up during this month. Please, if you or anyone you know are going through this, don't give up. Giving up is never the answer. Find someone to talk to, get help. It's alright to ask for help, I promise.

Just another photo so I could tell you the polishes used. I started with China Glaze Westside Warrior. Then I layered on Cult Nails Hypnotize Me and Once Upon a Polish The Beanstalk. I then covered it all with Finger Paints Black Expressionism. I used the grunge nail affect where you take off layers of polish using a paint brush and acetone.

Thank Goodness, Indie Friday - Once Upon a Polish Under the Sea

Welcome to this week's episode of TGIF: Thank Goodness, Indy Indie Friday!  Today I am featuring Once Upon a Polish Under the Sea. I have used this polish in a few manis already but I thought I should introduce you to it properly! :)

Once Upon a Polish Under the Sea is a gorgeous polish made up of blue hex glitters and holo square glitters in a clear base. I love this polish, it is so bright and happy! :) Two coats on my index and middle fingers with one coat on ring and pinkie fingers.

Just add some full on sun and watch it shine away! Look at that! :)

Here is a skittle to show off Under the Sea. Starting with my thumb and working clockwise:  OPI Wooden Shoe Like to Know?, Finger Paints Leonardo Da Vin-Pink, Essence Romeo, OPI Planks a Lot, and OPI Fiercely Fiona. This is one coat of Under the Sea on each nail.

Showing the skittle without the claw of all five fingers! :) I love how it pops off of the grey of Essence Romeo. Once Upon a Polish Under the Sea is really great to apply. Now, mind you, the holo squares are a bit sparse and sometimes don't like to play nicely but they do show up with a bit of help and dabbing! :) But no real major issues with this polish! All of Once Upon a Polish's polishes are fabulous and a dream or do I dare say it? A fairytale to apply! hahahahaha! Yep, I went there! :)

Show the bottle shot while showing off my thumb! It felt left out of the previous picture!

Macro bottle shot of Once Upon a Polish Under the Sea. Oh so purdy!

So, have you tried any of her polishes yet? If not, you really should! How do you find these amazing Indie polishes? Make sure you check out Once Upon a Polish's etsy page here and her facebook page here!

Oh and just for kicks and giggles here is a little background music for ya!

Thank Goodness, Indie Friday - Once Upon a Polish SNow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Welcome to this week's episode of TGIF: Thank Goodness, Indy Indie Friday!  Today I am featuring Once Upon a Polish Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

This is my first shredded glitter polish! Snow White and the Seven Drawfs has silver holographic hex glitters, black shredded glitters, and white hex glitters in a clear base. I love this look but I gotta say, the black shredded glitters kind of gave me some difficulties in spreading on my nails. I had to more place them then allow them to go randomly. But other than that I love it! And I'm totally fine with glitter being a bit of a handle with care! :)

The above photo is two coats of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on my index and middle fingers with one coat on ring and pinkie fingers.

So I had a few comments on what the glitters I am showing would look like on other colors. So I thought to do a skittle with my glitters to show you a range! :) All are one coat of Once Upon a Polish Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. (l-r) China Glaze Make Some Noise, OPI Mermaid's Tears, OPI Funky Dunkey, and Models Own Lemon Meringue. I like them all but my favorite(s) would be Mermaid's Tears and Lemon Meringue.

What do you think?

I promise this is another photo. It was a cloudy day and so not many of my photos worked. But both show how wonderfully shiny and glossy this top coat is! Love it!

Bottle shot of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. For some reason I really love the lid! :)

And glorious macro bottle shot of the yummy glitters in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Please make sure you check out Once Upon a Polish's etsy page here and her facebook page here!

Teal Tuesdays - Funky French

So I had this grand idea of stamping or french tape mani or layers or clean and crisp and simple. But as I put on my base french tip color I had an epiphany. And here is how my mani turned out. I am so loving this mani it's ridiculous!

Voila! Isn't it so purdy! I have no shame with this mani. I never expected it to work out so well! I am so proud of it! :) The colors I used are OPI Pink-a-Doodle. This is the natural look of my nails. It is beautiful pink with a deeper pink flash (gorgeous!) but the flash doesn't like to be photographed. Pink-a-Doodle is my new go-to french mani base! Love!

I also used OPI Fly and the base for the french tip. I then sponged China Glaze Atlantis and the sponged Once Upon a Polish Under the Sea over that!

Another photo just because! :) You can buy Once Upon a Polish here and her facebook page is here.

And yep another. I promise they are three different photos! :) I love the random square holo glitter found in Under the Sea it add a bit of dimension! :)

OPI Pink-a-Doddle and OPI Fly as tips. Uneven tips. But that's what the glitter hides! :)

TGIF: Thank Goodness, Indie Friday - Once Upon a Polish The Beanstalk

Welcome to this week's episode of TGIF: Thank Goodness, Indy Indie Friday! Today I am featuring a gorgeous glitter by none other than Once Upon a Polish. It's called The Beanstalk. Inspired by the beanstalk from Jack and the Beanstalk! :) I am loving her theme!

Here is The Beanstalk with no undies. It is a gorgeous clear base with a variety of green glitters in different shades, shapes and sizes (hexes, squares, medium, small, and micro) and silver hex glitter. It is absolutely stunning! My index and middle finger are two coats each. Ring and pinkie finger is only one coat each. I want to show you the difference between the two.

Slightly different angle and lighting than the picture before. Look at the shinnies! So pretty! I didn't have any problems with this glitter. It applied wonderfully and evenly enough! Bonus! :) You need this glitter, oh yes, you do! I promise you will not be disappointed! I can't wait to try in a jelly sammich!

Here is Once Upon a Polish The Beanstalk over Cult Nails Power Thief. Gorgeous combo! Loving it! :)

Teal Tuesdays - Glitterbomb!

This week's Tealicure is a Glitterbomb! Well, then, bombs away! This magical mani is made up of four glitters all over OPI Skull & Glossbones (hence the bottle shot here). I love how this turned out! :)

Here are the four gorgeous glitters! Yummy! Once Upon a Polish Under the Sea, Essence Edward, China Glaze Atlantis, and Sally Hansen Teal-y Cool.

Macro bottle shot of Once Upon a Polish Under the Sea. Um, gorgeous! Teal hex glitter with silver square glitter! Perfection! And did I mention they are holos? Yep!

Macro bottle shot of Essence Edward. Bahahahaha! Still makes me laugh that he is the glitter out of the Twins (Bella being the creme). This is a lovely teal square and hex glitters with micro holo glitters.

Macro bottle shot of China Glaze Atlantis. This is made up of billions of teal micro holo glitters in a teal base! Love!

Macro bottle shot of Sally Hansen Teal-y Cool. Can I just say that Sally Hansen bottles are very lame to do macro shots with. Their sticker covers the whole bottle! Grrr! But this is a lesser version, lessed packed with glitters than Atlantis but it is still lovely!

Here is a macro of one of my fingers to show you the layers of this mani. I love how it turned out! And see! You can see Skull & Glossbones peeking out at the top! :)

And a final photo, the hallelujah sun shot photo of my Glitterbomb Tealicure. Boo-yah! :)

Now, question for you all. How do you prefer the photos? I decided to change it up yesterday and today. If I do my photos more vertical I can get the whole polish bottle in the picture.

So my question to you all (and to see if you truly are reading this post! Hahaha, no not really!) should I continue with the vertical photos like above or go back to the horizontal photos (ex: the bottle shot photo of the four glitters I used). Thank you for your input! :)
